Lawrence County Ohio Jail Project

One of three pre-Civil War stone jails still in existence in Ohio.

This building was built as a jail in 1846 in Burlington, Lawrence Co., Ohio.

Burlington was the first county seat of Lawrence county until the new town of Ironton was established in 1849.  Around 1852, a new jail was built in Ironton and this building was sold to private individuals.

Cassie Brubaker Shute, the 3rd wife of James G. Shute, lived here with her two children.

A wonderful group of dedicated individuals are trying to raise funds to have this building restored and used as an Underground Railroad Museum.

(More history and photos of the old jail coming soon)
