From the Kentucky State Journal, 15 July 1884, in a column called "The City" Mr. Harmon Potts, the well-known steamboat man, died at his home on Williamson Street last night from cancer of the stomach. From the Kentucky State Journal, 19 August 1884, under "County Court": The last will and testament of Hiram Potts, deceased, was offered for probate, and passed until the September term. All the above refers to Newport, Campbell County, Kentucky. I do have a copy of a transcript of his will and will review that to see if there's anything in it that might be of interest. I would love to find out more about this great great grandfather! He must have been a pretty interesting man. The last will and testament of Hiram Potts does not give any genealogical information, other than some indication of a serious difference between he and his second wife Sarah (the widow) who apparently had previously claimed title to some land in her name and her children's' without his or their children. There was mention made that this was done at the beginning of the Civil War -- that's where I get the impression that Hiram, born in Pennsylvania of Quaker ancestry, and Sarah, born in S. or N. Carolina, possibly of Confederate sympathy must have crossed swords, but they were married when he died in 1884. She died in 1900.
