Capt. John C. Shute formerly of this county (Lawrence Co) died of yellow fever last week.

The New Orleans Crescent newspaper of Wednesday, says: we are pained to learn that a telegraphic dispatch was received yesterday from R. Russ, announcing the death by yellow fever of Capt. Shute, commander of the steamer, CUBA No. 2 while on her trip from this port to Shreveport.  Capt. Notes for Irene Eveyln Shute:

From Sharon Kouns to Don Miles 8/05:

Irene known as Two Gun Shute        Irene Shute christening the Irene fire truck

I remember hearing about Irene Shute also known as "Two Gun Shute" - I believe she was sheriff of Opelousas.  I have a picture of her somewhere with her gun strapped on her side.  Do you have that?  Have you heard of her?  Her dad was the owner of a drugstore.  Possibly your grandfather/great grandfather?  Anyway the story goes that she donated a fire truck to the town of Opelousas and years went by and the town needed another one and she bought them another truck.  When she died they found her burial wishes and she wanted to be taken to the cemetery on the "Irene II"  (they named both trucks after her).  Trouble was that when they got to the cemetery the truck couldn't go through the gate so they had to carry her body.  Have you ever heard of this story?  It is one of my favorite stories.

 Irene Shute

We were also told that Readers Digest did an article on her years ago and I wrote to them but they had no record of one.

From Don Miles to Sharon Kouns 8/05:

You are right on the mark about Irene Shute.  We called her Aunt "T".  She was my mothers aunt,  my great aunt.  She was a sister to Frank Creighton Shute Sr. M.D.  I do have a picture of her in full dress with 10 gallon hat,  two pistols, one on each hip, badge and boots.   The Shute building is still in use in Opelousas,  and stands on the corner across the street from the court house, and the firetruck story is 100% true.

Aunt T never married and lived with my mothers brother,  F.C. Shute Jr. M.D., also his aunt,  in Opelousas, La.,  until she died in 1962.   F. C. Shute Jr. also died in 1962, and F.C. Shute III, died in 1963,  after just graduating from Tulane School of Medicine.   That left Gail Shute, Owen Shute and (little Irene Shute born in 1960.)

From Don Miles to Sharon Kouns 8/05

I wish I knew stories of Aunt "T" (Irene) to tell you.  My mother's cousin, Owen Shute,  could tell you some stories of her.  He lived in the same house with her from the time he was born in 1947,  until she died in 1962.

One story I do know and heard, from my mothers brother, Creighton,  on different occasions about the 1931 DeSota car that she drove like a bat from h---.  Back then, there was no such thing as a drivers test or license.  If you could afford a car,  you could drive.  No questions asked.  Aunt T never learned to back a car up in reverse.  She always parked the old car and left it facing the same directions she would continue in when she returned to the car.  This one particular day,  she got confused, or something, and forgot to leave the car facing where she would be going when she returned.  Consequently,  story has it,  she had to drive all the way to Shuteston and make a turn around in a cul-de-sac so she could go home.

As far as the people in the picture,  The man to aunt "T"'s right could be, and I think is, her daddy.  They were in the business together.  One of the men in the picture is an employee named Baumann.
