    Information on this family comes from the Spear Family Memorial 1620-1985 Book, written by Samuel Walter Spear the son of Nancy and John. John and Nancy left Illinois for Tama between 1878 & 1880 to sec 22, Spring Creek Twp. They received $660 from the sale of the farm in Illinois.

    John Edward born in Vermont, spent some time in Canada and migrated to Illinois by "waterway". Family record is "he is said to have rafted from Canada". First record of him in Illinois shows him in Stephenson Co. on the 1850 census, and single. After marriage, they farmed in Ogle and Carroll Counties, Illinois, until selling their land in 1879.

    John married Nancy Berry 24 Aug 1853, Oregon Town, Ogle County, Illinois. Nancy (daughter of Stephen Berry and Mary Smith) was born 11 May 1830, Canada; died 10 Feb 1884. [Group Sheet]

  1. 14.  Stephen Berry was born 16 Sep 1793, Newfield, York, Maine (son of Samuel Berry and Nancy); died 4 Sep 1881, Spring Creek township; was buried Crystal Cemetery north of Toledo and Garwin.

    Notes:

    Stephen served in the war of 1812. Stephen Berry lived in Canada until 1852 when he moved his family to Ogle County, Illinois and engaged in farming 9 years, then moving to Stephenson Co., Ill. He moved to Spring Creek Township, Gladbrook, Tama County, Iowa Stephen was a Trustee in the Rock Creek Church that was erected in 1865. Stephen farmed and owned a farm with a beautiful home a short distance southeast of Gladbrook, Iowa. It is remembered he was one of the heaviest taxpayers in that township.
