    William and Harriett homesteaded land in Iowa County near North English for $1.25 an acre. They had a farm that the Chicago Illinois is built on in the past. They forded the mississippi in covered wagons and mace to North English Iowa where they settled. William and Harriett had seven children.     Notes:

    Benjamin Carter and Anna M. Braymer were residents of New York State. In an old family history book Benjamin Carter's birthday was found as 4 March 1809. Sometime after the birth of their six children the decision was made to relocate the family in Iowa County, Iowa. A family legend told by Wynter West, who was a descendant of the Carter's stated that the father Benjamin was killed on the way to Iowa by Indians. Further research may prove or disprove this. Anna and her children were settled in Iowa by the 1856 Census and Anna had married William Raines. She and Raines later had another child named Charles who lived two months. Many members of the Carter family are buried in a family cemetery with another closely related family, The Claypool at Yankee Point Cemetery Iowa (this information is passed on by Jacquelyn Garringer
