    • I just realized that I am off a generation with this Matthew per the obituary of Mary Ellen Cox McRary. While viewing Ancestry and the tree of Richard McCrary he has Matthew Jr. being born 4 May 1773 Botetourt Co., VA.

      Oldest Person in Caldwell Dead.
On last Friday night, Nov. 19th, Mrs. Mary McRary, relict of the late Robt. McRary, died at the home of her son, Mr. F. M. McRary, in Little River township. She was, perhaps the oldest person living in the coun ty ? being born on the 22nd day of March, 1801, making her age 96 years, 8 months, and 27 days.

Her maiden name was Cox, being a daughter of the late Mathew Cox. She was married to the late Robert McRary on the 9th day of Dec. 1819, whom she survived over 20 years, he having died on the 4th day of Oct. 1877. They raised up three children, two sons ? Mr. F. M. McRary, of Little River, with whom she lived, and Mr. J. T. McRary, now living near Elk Park, Mitchell county ? and a daughter Mrs. Abigail Blair, relict of the late John Blair, of Little River, all of whom are still living. From these have sprung a numerous progeny ? there being many great-grand children and a number of the fourth generation great-great grandchildren.

      Sherrill Genealogy
      Excerpt:

      Rev. M. V. Sherrill,
I have been for several years trying to get a complete genealogy of the Southern Sherrills and their numerous connections all of them in this part of the country descended from Adam Sherrill, who came from the Shenandoah Valley, Va., to the Catawba Valley, N.C., in 1747, and died between 1772 and 1774. I want the descendants of William Sherrell (son of William, son of Adam) who first settled on the south side of the Catawba river, opposite the mouth of Gunpowder creek, in what is now Catawba county, and about 1788 settled on Gunpowder creek, Sept. 25, 1750 and died May 18, 1829. He first married Isabel Lowrance, by whom he had the following children:
      ....

I've added Margaret's side to this family tree - for those connected to the Sherill's should go to the newspaper to gather more family names. Adding this under Cox to possibly see if the Cox and Sherrell's followed the same route into NC. - smk
