An exert from the book Washington Young of Wayne county, Kentucky and his Descendants
In the late 1850's and 1860's there began a migration from Wayne, Clinton, and Russell Counties, Kentucky to Jasper county, Iowa, with a number of these folks settling in the rock Creek Township. Included were, Edward Young, Alvin Adkins, and Eli Phipps. Other of the Kentucky settlers located in the Buena vista and Washington Townships of this county, but the majority located in Rock Creek, so many that I have been told that his township used to be known as "Little Kentucky" Buried in the Rock Creek Cemetery are many of the original settlers, including Koger, Parmley, Keeton, Rice, Slagle, Edward and Jane Young, Alvin and Mary Ann Adkins, Eli and Elizabeth Phipps and many of their descendants. Family tradition has it that the land for this cemetery was given by Alvin Adkins and that the evergreens growing therein were brought by him from the rocky Mountain on one of his return trips from California, where he had been to mine gold. This may well be true, but the map of this township contained in the 1901 edition of the Atlas of Jasper County shows this land and cemetery to be included in the farm of N.I. Phipps

      --------------------------------

An exert from "Past and Present of Jasper County, Iowa" edited by General James B. Weaver,
Rock Creek Township is on the eastern border of Jasper County and the second from the north line. It compromises all of Congressional Township No. 80 range 17 W, except section 31 in the southwest corner, which belongs to Kellogg Twp. Hickory Grove Twp lies to the north; Poweshiek County to the east; Richland Township at the south and Kellogg Township on its's west. In the central and eastern portions is a fine body of native timber. Rock Creek a beautiful stream with its' branches affords ample drainage for this township, which for the greater part is made up of excellent farming lands, now of high value on account of the price of land and its exceptional fine productive qualities. The Rock Island railroad runs through its' domain from the west to west, bearing to the southeast in course. According to the State census reports in 1905, the population of rock Creek Twp was seven hundred and twenty four. It takes its name, evidently, from the stream of the same name, a tributary of Skunk River. Among the first original entries of government land within this township, may be mentioned Theodore Whitney in the northwest of section 9 on October 27, 1848; Charles G. Adams in the north half of the northeast quarter of section 27 and south half of the southeast section 22 on the same date. This township was set off from Lynn Grove Twp, September 4, 1854. The first election was held at the house of James Elliott. This subdivision of Jasper county was described as being Congressional township number 80 and 81, range 17 west. Later Hickory Grove was formed from its northern half. Among the fatal accidents in this township is recalled by those living there in 1874, is that of Washington Young, who was struck by lightning on Sep 19 of that year and instantly killed, while standing in front of his blacksmith shop. A man and boy standing nearby him were badly shocked, but not materially injured. During the same thunder storm a barn belonging to J H Russell, living five miles southwest of Newton, was set on fire by lightning and totally destroyed.
