Came across a Contract and Lease made between Daniel Brubaker and his son David T. Brubaker in the possession of Helen and Everette Leroy Brubaker.. This lease is signed by Daniel Brubaker, David T. Brubaker, and Salome A. Brubaker. It pertains with the leasing of land on the Ohio river, the upkeep of the mansion which stands there, allowing for Daniel to live on three acres of this land, the well being, and care of David Todd's father Daniel, and the 1/4 return to Daniel Brubaker on all the crops which come from this land, and also last but not least the payment of $700.00 to Julia Elkins, David T's sister over the course of 3 years following Daniels death, as part of her inheritance from the Estate. This contract was to have been binding for the entire natural life of Daniel Brubaker, so he knew that he could be cared for the rest of his life in the way in which he had grown accustom to. The date for this binding contract was June 11, 1866, two years before the death of his father.
On the top of this contract their is a note which reads: For Value Received I hereby release all my claim in and under this Instrument and the estate herein described. Dated 1871 Ironton, Ohio. With Daniels death in 1868, I am wondering if this statement was written by Julia Ann Brubaker Elkin upon payment of the $700.00. There is no signature following the statement, but Julia is the only one of the children mentioned in the lease as to having any claim to the estate....

    Brubaker, James---IRONTON Jan 26 1865
James Brubaker, a young man of about 18 year, and son of Daniel Brubaker, of Perry Township, died on last Friday, with all the symptoms of hydrophobia. During the mad dog excitement in this county in October, he received a bite from a dog. The dog was killed for his viciousness, through slightly suspected of madness. Up to within a few days of his death, the health of the deceased had been, as usual, with the exception, that the week previous he had accidentally cut himself on the knee and had been confined to the house on account of the wound. His constant thirst and great aversion to water, gave sure indication of the dreadful end that awaited him. During his last hours he suffered extremely, requiring force to keep him on his bed during his ravings. He thought that if he could only "drink a draught of good water" he would get well, He remained apparently in his right mind till death relieved him.

    1. There was a Brubaker that lived near my family in Carlton, WA in the 30's and 40's when my dad was kid. My dad said he was single and always lived alone.
    2. I'm sure this is the same guy my dad knew as a kid. I remember my dad saying he liked a little wine now and then and that he had a big telescope that my dad and his brother would take out on the porch when they were kids and watch mule deer herds on the other side of the valley during the fall hunting season. My Dad's father knew him very well. Do you know what he did for a living? The house he lived in was torn down about 20 years ago, and we still hunt in the same area where he lived. My Dad always talks about him when we drive by the place where he lived. My Dad did say they always called him Bill.

    ----------------e-mail from March 25, 2002
    From Ed McConnell
The road to Bill's old place is about 1/2 way between Carlton and Twisp on the highway, and is near a big concrete water weir, on the face of the weir is my name faded out slightly. Bill and my grandfather were good friends, and built the road together. Take the dirt road near that weir up the hill to the two gates, stop your car at the gates and walk on through the gate that is on the right. Just beyond that gate about 75 yards look to your left, and you will see where someone has put up a couple of buildings. The house Bill had sat at that location looking across the valley. It was a small wood frame house with a porch on it and was standing until about 20 years ago when a forest fire went through the area. I'm not sure if the Forest Service burned the house down or if the Forest Fire burned it down. WATCH For RATTLE SNAKES. You can walk right over a snake in that country and not know it. They don't always rattle.

After a few more contacts with Ed McConnell he gave me a Stanley and Arthur Darwood of Twisp Washington to contact. Stanley and Arthur would go out to visit when there father would go to see Bill

Arthur told me that Bill was about 5 foot 11 inches weight of about 180 pounds if his memory serves him correct. Bill was a Dry Land Farmer (no irrigation) he raised Oats, Rye and Wheat. He had a few horses, and cattle which he would sell the cream to make ends meet. His house was small it was a two story house, Pantry, Living area, and Kitchen down stairs and a bed room up stairs. He had a old milk house and a cellar out back where he would keep his potatos. He really enjoyed sitting on the front porch in his home made chair just watching the hills and the sunsets. All that he had around his land was timbers and hills. Their were a lot of rattle snakes in his area, so when the kids would come he watched to see that they could get in and out with no problem. He is remembered as being a good man, a gentle man, always willing to help his neighbors, who helped him in return.

SPECIAL MEMORIES OF CARYL LYNN BRUBAKER--------I remember our visits to Iowa--the Quaker Oaks Refinery smell!!! The neat kitchen "stuff" and trinkets Grandma had, and how Pop (David R.) could never watch a game without falling asleep in his chair. But, don't ever try to change the channel because he'd wake up! I remember my grandmothers long hair and used to watch her brush it, braid it, and roll it up. I also remember Pop's Flinstones glasses he'd have an evening drink in. I am the proud owner of one of the Flinstones glasses (yes, as in Fred Flinstones) he drank from. I love it, it reminds me of him. I remember how extra delicious the corn-on-the cob was there, and the rich dark soil. But, the all time best was when the preacher moved in caddy corner across the street to their house --- how he'd preach over a loud speaker and how it would burn Pop up. Although I felt sometimes it was his afternoon "entertainment"....

SPECIAL MEMORIES OF SHIRLEY LOVEJOY BRUBAKER------I loved Bru's father and mother, and Pop (David R.) was a real character and an original. He loved to tease me and loved to argue while having his Friday night toddy. By the end of the evening he would have changed sides several times of his argument to keep it going. I have so many good memories of the Brubaker family and am proud to be part of it

SPECIAL MEMORIES OF Leroy: I talked with him about the old carriage that his father would let the kids use to go to school when he didn't need the horses. He called it the coupe of carriages, It was totally enclosed with a glass windshield for the sides it had windows and doors. Not a normal carriage that we would see these days. His father had 4 horses, and it usually took all 4 horses for the farm equipment. But when he didn't need one of the horses, the kids could use one to go to school. When he moved out and married, he moved to the Grinnell area, he remembers working at the Ford Garage, earning $15.00 a week. The apartment that they rented cost $25.00 a month, until they found one for $15.00 a month. He worked at the glove factory as so many did in the Grinnell area. For him he told me so many times you do what you need to to survive in this world. When his father became ill, they moved out to a farm, Leroy has spent most of his life farming, it was his lifes work and he was proud of it. He milked cows, raised hogs, he several chickens over the years. Still living on the farm but now renting out the farm grounds. He specially enjoys working in the garden now that he is retired.
