    Nathaniel settled on the land that originally was cleared by Baccus, Baccus had lived there for several years, he had farmed some, hunted some, but was not content, so he moved on down below Pine Creek. Nathaniel was a farmer so this land was perfect for him, he took possession as land owner, and paid considerable attention to an apple orchard, setting the trees on exact row, and trimming them so as to make them sightly, and of even balance. He hunted for a pass-time and was one of the best of marksmen with the rifle; kept a blacksmith shop, with a few blacksmith tools for his own convenience; for sometime acted in the capacity of Associate Judge of the court; was a good neighbor; lost his eyesight; became a member of the Baptist Church, and died a Christian in his 80th year. Judge John Davisson
    ....Judge John Davisson was born in Maryland in 1777, came to Ohio and about 1801 settled on a tract of land beginning with the south bank of Storms Creek, following the Ohio river south to a point near where the D. T. & I. depot now stands, thence by a due east line out over the “Chronacher Hill” near the tunnel on Park Avenue. He was one of the pioneers who cleared away the timber and farmed the land on which the lower portion of Ironton now stands. He built his first log cabin about where the “old mill” used to stand, and set out fruit trees around it. Each year saw more land cleared and brought under cultivation until in 1812 he built a modern hewn log house; which stood about where Buckhorn street crosses Fourth street. Notes:

    We all refer to David Todd as David, However in my search and contacts with people in the Southpoint, Ohio area, he went by the name "TODD"

    The Ironton Register recorded David and Arzelia's wedding on Jan 18, 1866 (However it is recorded as David P. Brubaker and Arzelia Salome Clark)

    David served in the 188th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the war of 1867 until it's conclusion under Captain Sumpter. {taken from "1882 Hardiest Atlas page H-27"}

    Davids Civil War Papers show him as Private of Company I - 188th Reg Ohio Infantry as of Feb 15, 1865, age 21, height 5 foot 8 inches complexion light, eyes blue, hair brown.

    Came across a Contract and Lease made between Daniel Brubaker and his son David T. Brubaker in the possession of Helen and Everette Leroy Brubaker.. This lease is signed by Daniel Brubaker, David T. Brubaker, and Salome A. Brubaker. It pertains with the leasing of land on the Ohio river, the upkeep of the mansion which stands there, allowing for Daniel to live on three acres of this land, the well being, and care of David Todd's father Daniel, and the 1/4 return to Daniel Brubaker on all the crops which come from this land, and also last but not least the payment of $700.00 to Julia Elkins, David T's sister over the course of 3 years following Daniels death, as part of her inheritance from the Estate. This contract was to have been binding for the entire natural life of Daniel Brubaker, so he knew that he could be cared for the rest of his life in the way in which he had grown accustom to. The date for this binding contract was June 11, 1866, two years before the death of his father.
    On the top of this contract their is a note which reads: For Value Received I hereby release all my claim in and under this Instrument and the estate herein described. Dated 1871 Ironton, Ohio. With Daniels death in 1868, I am wondering if this statement was written by Julia Ann Brubaker Elkin upon payment of the $700.00. There is no signature following the statement, but Julia is the only one of the children mentioned in the lease as to having any claim to the estate....

    Ironton Register
    Brubaker, James---IRONTON Jan 26 1865
    James Brubaker, a young man of about 18 year, and son of Daniel Brubaker, of Perry Township, died on last Friday, with all the symptoms of hydrophobia. During the mad dog excitement in this county in October, he received a bite from a dog. The dog was killed for his viciousness, through slightly suspected of madness. Up to within a few days of his death, the health of the deceased had been, as usual, with the exception, that the week previous he had accidentally cut himself on the knee and had been confined to the house on account of the wound. His constant thirst and great aversion to water, gave sure indication of the dreadful end that awaited him. During his last hours he suffered extremely, requiring force to keep him on his bed during his ravings. He thought that if he could only "drink a draught of good water" he would get well, He remained apparently in his right mind till death relieved him.
