  1. 1.  Harriet Mae Brubaker was born 1 Oct 1906, South Point, Lawrence County, Ohio; died 23 Oct 1996, Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio; was buried Highland Memorial Gardens of south Point.


    Harriet was a native of Lawrence County and a member of the First Baptist Church, South Point. Harriet attended Delta Elementary School. She graduated form South Point High and attended Marshal University where she graduated in 1968. In 1927 she began teaching at a one room school at forest Dale. Her first 12 years of teaching included Hanging Rock and Coal Grove schools. She then married and lived in Florida for 10 years, and then returned to South Point where she taught at Sheridan Elementary for 18 years. She was a school teacher for 35 years before retiring.

    Harriet Davenport of Route 5 Box 533. South Point, is a lady who believes in living life to the fullest. "Its been an interesting period of time, from the horse and buggy days to the atomic age. "she said. Harriet, whose home place is located directly across the street from where she now lives, is proud of her family history. Her mother was Nettie Winters Brubaker, daughter of Amaziah Winters, and William rubaker was her father. "There were seven children in the family and I was fourth from the top." she said. "My parents were good, hard-working people and both lived to be 91 years of age. They never had a pension and were never in the hospital, " Harriet said. "One of the most rewarding things I've done in my life was to care for them in my home for 11 years prior to their death" Harriet is a graduate of South Point High School, also Marshall University with a B.S. degree in education. "I walked, or got a ride whenever possible, to North Kenova, rode the ferry across the Ohio River to Kenova, WV, and then rode a street car up Third Avenue to Marshall." she said. "I boarded on winter with a family on 11th Avenue. My school days were a happy time." At the very beginning, Harriet realized she had chosen the right profession. "I loved the association with children and I loved to teach" she said. "I always opened with Bible reading and prayer." Harriet was 19 years old when she began teaching the third and fourth grade classes at Forest Dale. George Webb was the principal and William Paul held the office of Lawrence County school superintendent.
