The Minnie Bay

The Minnie Bay

My love for the Ohio River and it’s history inspired me to attempt to do this sidewheel paddle boat.  The Minnie Bay was named for the first born daughter of Capt. George Bay of Lawrence County, Ohio.  He owned over 30 boats during his career on the river.  He also named a boat after each of his 8 daughters.  This was the second boat named after Minnie.  The first was called “Minnie” and was built in 1864.  The one depicted above was built around 1884 and plied in the Huntington-Ironton-Portsmouth-Marietta trade until she was sold.  She then plied in the Carrolton-Madison-Louisville trade until she sunk.  I’m still looking for the year she sank.

This painting is in my private collection.
